Wailing Critters

Patch 7.2 brought one of the most anticipated features in the pet battling world: a new pet battle dungeon!

To enter the dungeon, your character needs to be level 110 and you need one level 25 pet in your collection (although it is recommended to have a few more ^^). Head over to Dalaran above the Broken Isles and visit the pet shop. Either Serr'ah or Lio the Lioness will offer you a breadcrumb quest to fly all the way over to the Wailing Caverns in the Barrens.
When you arrive, visit Muyani on top of the entrance and you will be offered the quest Wailing Critters. Muyani will also start the scenario for you.

Inside the dungeon, you will have to beat six waves of enemy pets. In your very first run, you can heal your pets in between each fight. This is the normal mode.
In the respective section here (green skull) you will find some strategies that work well. While having more pets is recommended to be done faster, most of the individual combinations will even work for the whole dungeon (with the help of a lot of healing).
Beating the dungeon on normal mode will reward you with one Ultimate Battle Training Stone.

It also unlocks the Challenge Mode, during which you cannot heal or revive your pets, much like the Celestial Tournament. If you also beat this additional challenge, you get an achievement and two rewards, the pet Son of Skum and a new satchel, the Damp Pet Supplies which has a chance for one of these:

Young Venomfang
Cavern Moccasin
Everliving Spore

The main challenge is not in the individual fights (like it was with the Celestial Touranment), because the fights are not very hard. The difficult part is the amount of fights that will slowly drain the number of full-health pets in your collection.
If you have a large collection of pets at your disposal, the challenge mode won't be hard for you.

Xu-Fu can scan this section for the most suitable strategies according to your preferences and show the required pets.
The Regular option will allow using pets multiple times.
Heroic mode will use each pet only once due to the restriction of no healing.

If you're having difficulties picking up the breadcrumb quest, go to Legion Dalaran and speak to Lio the Lioness there. She won't have this quest in your garrison. She also didn't have a quest marker (!), even with low level quests turned on. Once I moused over her, the ! showed up on my cursor, but still no ! above her head.

I am having to recreate all of my teams (& yes I will back them up after they are set up) as my Blizz UI got corrupted & I had to wipe all of my Add-ons WTF etc... to get Bags useable/ visible. Unfortunately many of the teams are importing without strategy notes & I have no idea how to make sure the notes are included when I do a mass import.

wymon wrote on 2023-12-13 07:01:25

hello , when i download the heroic mode strings, its not showing the strategies for the fights, just wondering if its an issue on my end or an issue in the string? okay thank you have a good day

I just took a look, and Heroic Mode is exporting the strategy strings as the comments for me.

Maybe it went wrong on import?

Maybe try deleting your current teams for these battles before you do the iimport?

I don't know, but I can see that the site is exporting the comments for me.

Are all the pet dungeons weekly? Is there a script to find out when you can redo them. I have done some on Alt's and don't remember what day I did them. I can't seem to get into any of them.

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-09-15 09:05:07

All the dungeons are account-wide and weekly. I posted a script below:

/run for k, v in pairs({ Wailing_Caverns = 45539, Deadmines = 46292, Stratholme = 56492, Gnomeregan = 54186}) do print(format("%s: %s", k, IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(v) and "124cff00ff00Done.124r" or "124cffff0000Not Done.124r")) end

Rascallycat

wrote on 2020-09-15 09:42:14

it responded with a code (124cff00ff00Done.124r) for all but that doesn't tell me when I can redo them

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-09-15 13:06:40

You can do them again after weekly reset.

Also I see that the edit here stripped the backslashes from the macro, which shows the colour code as hex when run. Gaaak!

/run for k, v in pairs({ Wailing_Caverns = 45539, Deadmines = 46292, Stratholme = 56492, Gnomeregan = 54186}) do print(format("%s: %s", k, IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(v) and "Done." or "Not Done.")) end

at least spares you the gobbledygook.

I have over 1000 pets, I have around 461 level 25 pets, I'm level 120, I've done Stratholme and the Deadmines but Lio the Lioness is not offering up the crumb quest for the Wailing Caverns nor any of the rest of the pet raids. How do I trigger the quests?

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-04-30 18:02:42

If you've done the Deadmines, you must have done Wailing Critters. You don't get Deadmines until you've done WC.

Lio doesn't give the quests anyhow.

Go to Dana Pull's shop in Boralus, or Breanni's shop in Legion Dalaran.

P.S. On second thought, I'm not sure you can get the quest for Blackrock Depths in Breanni's shop. Dana Pull is a safer bet.

https://www.wowhead.com/npc=142065/dana-pull (edited)

Anna wrote on 2020-04-30 18:59:39

It's not there and I can't find the NPC at the front of the dungeon. Nor does the void have the transport there. Dana Pull doesn't have the quest either. Maybe it's sitting on one of my alts.

Anna wrote on 2020-04-30 19:03:57

<facepalm> those quests are account wide and I don't have the quest

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-04-30 19:09:08

Do you have the transport to Deadmines?

Anna wrote on 2020-04-30 19:21:09

I was late getting to all these pet dungeons. I just started a couple of weeks ago. Lio the Lioness (in Dalaran and in Breanni's shop) had the quests for both Deadmines and Stratholme. I was expecting the others to pop up once I finished those two (which I have and have on farm). But nothing. Tizzy Gearjolt doesn't have anything either.

Anna wrote on 2020-04-30 19:21:37

Yes I do and I have it to Stratholme

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-04-30 19:33:05

Run this command, which shows which of the first 4 dungeons you've done this week:

/run for k, v in pairs({ Wailing_Caverns = 45539, Deadmines = 46292, Stratholme = 56492, Gnomeregan = 54186}) do print(format("%s: %s", k, IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(v) and "124cff00ff00Done.124r" or "124cffff0000Not Done.124r")) end

Then separately run this:

/script print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(45423))

That says "true" or "false" depending on whether the game believes you have ever done WC.

I'm reading around to try and find out whether they changed something so it's possible to do DM without finishing WC first.

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-04-30 19:59:02

Gotta go, but just a final thought. Check your Achievements for "Pro Pet Group" or "Crew" or "Mob" and check your Achievements for "Pet Battle Challenge: Wailing Caverns".

If they made a change to allow people to do DM before WC, I can't find it.

Anna wrote on 2020-04-30 20:44:58

Thanks so much for all your help. That first script the results are:
Wailing Caverns: not done
Deadmines: done
Stratholme: done
Gnomeregan: not done

The second script is false.

I have both the achievements Pro Pet Mob and Rookie Pet Mob. Like I said I have over 400 pets over level 25.

I remember getting access to Gnomeregan a while ago. I failed the first boss a few times and just left the dungeon and eventually deleted the quest thinking I would pick it up later. My next step is to look where the NPCs should be outside and see if they are there.

Anna wrote on 2020-04-30 20:51:19

Hooray. The Gnomeregan NPC Zoox is there! I guess I just need to find the NPC for Wailing Caverns.

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-05-01 09:35:44

Thinking about it afterwards, I now suspect you must have done the initial quest to meet Muylani. Can you try

/script print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(45540))
which I suspect will show "true"
and
/script print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(45423))
which I suspect will show "false"

If so, you need to find Muylani, who should be standing in the left eye socket of the "skull" at the entrance to WC.

I know you say you can't find her. I don't know what to say to that. If you're EU, I can meet you there ingame, just to check, but I don't have any more help to offer than that with what I know so far.

Anna wrote on 2020-05-01 15:58:01

Thanks for ALL your help. I just couldn't find Muylani. The quest marker wasn't showing up. I finally found her name and where she was and as soon as I got to the eye she showed up. So now I'm in the dungeon and I have it all figured out.

I've been using the Nature's Ward/Ravage method since the big nerf and haven't had any problem using the same Teroclaw Hatchling for the first three fights and any subsequent fights that call for it, but this week I ended up using all three of my Teroclaw Hatchlings and had difficulty finishing fights with more than 60% health. I've been leveling pets when I do the dungeon lately but I had to abandon that in this run through.

So for most of the fights in here I've just substituted anything with Nature's Ward for the Teroclaw and only used the Teroclaw for Vilefang. I've got 4 or 5 pets with Nature's Ward and they seem to do the trick just fine. Autumnal Sproutling is a good MVP for this w/Nature's Ward + Sons of the Root which avoids damage and let's nature's ward heal back up.

You will have to update several pet duels where "Teroclaw Hatchling" is used, since in BFA they changed the combination of their powers.

Ezriann wrote on 2018-07-20 14:45:05

Mine did pretty well using Ravage in the third slot and making sure to use it for the killing blow on each pet for the heal.

Olania

wrote on 2018-06-10 18:07:15

I used a moth for one of the "any pet" slots. There's a lot of aquatic pets in the backline, and the moth chews through them easily without having to use an important pet.

Solshine

wrote on 2018-06-11 15:07:40

I agree! Moths are great as 2nd and 3rd slot fillers, they can dodge stuff with cocoon when timed properly (Blood in the water, Slicing winds) and have a chance to put opponent to sleep with dust throw :)

petmysnake wrote on 2018-04-29 01:26:29

Start looking for a replacesment for your Teroclaw. In Battle for Azeroth it's Dodge and Nature's Wardwill share a talent spot.

Throughout this dungeon, you will see Teroclaw Hatchling and Anypet as your 2nd and 3rd options. Pick pets with Wish as your 3rd option. I prefer the Hyjal Wisp with Evasion and Wish. The evasion allows you a round of freedom to cast wish if when need it. It also allows you to dodge things like Whirlpool. Also remember, park your Teroclaw on low health but with Nature's Ward active. NW still heals it on the bench. Between Wish and NW, you should never lose your Hatchling.

Other pets with Wish, Celestial Calf, Magic Lamp, Magical Crawdad and Zao

Joe wrote on 2017-06-04 17:42:33

Scripts are now up for all the WC fights, but please note than any strat that has you using a random pet will require you to manually select abilities during those portions, unless you're using multiple Emerald Proto-Whelps, or a Dream Whelpling, in which case, the script will handle the ability selections for you :)

Anonymous wrote on 2017-05-16 02:27:06

Hey there! First of all, thank you to the entire Xu-fu team for all your hard work on this site. Seriously - without a site like this to help me out, I would have lost interest in the pet battles a long time ago.

As a part of that hard work - in the future, could you maybe differentiate things in a manner besides color? You provide us with both normal and Challenge mode information, but in order to access the Challenge mode section, we're instructed to "please select the red skull on the top left". This seems innocuous - but I'm red-green colorblind, and I legitimately can't tell which one of those skulls is supposed to be "the red one" here. I know they're different, and my gut says it's the one with the crossbones because it's the skull with the design-addition, but they're both just weird sorts of "brown" too similar to know for sure at first glance which one you mean.

This may be something that only impacts maybe a few percent of your users, but any investment in UX improvement is worth keeping colorblindness in mind. Text will almost always be a better way to convey a separate category on a page like this - but if color MUST be used, it's safer to use Blue (beneficial) and Orange (caution) as the contrasting colors. This is because ~9% of biological males and ~.5% of biological females are some degree of red-green colorblind, where less than 1% of all humans are blue-yellow colorblind at all.

I just wanted to bring this to your attention because - at least for me - colorblindness is almost never really an issue until it smacks you in the face with the fact that you have it. People frustrated from getting rekt don't need that cropping up when they're reaching out for help with something completely unrelated. Your site has never been anything other than helpful, and I'm sure that it just never occured to you that this was even really a thing to consider.

Thank you for your time reading this and your continued dedication to the pet battle community.

Hello there!

It took me a while to answer to your comment, because I wanted to add a little something to the challenge mode selectors first. It's only a temporary fix but now there's a mouseover that shows in text which is which.

I have to say, your comment took me by surprise. I myself have a red/green deficiency as well, and often enough encountered UI design that did not cater for this where I ran into trouble using menus, recognizing patterns etc.
With this background, I never thought I would fall victim to the same flaw, and I am indeed very sorry for it.

With the new Deadmines dungeon I will re-design the dungeons (since it looks like there will be more coming^^) and I'll try to find a better way to display it.

If you do find any other places on the page where this is troubling or inconvenient, please do let me know!

Pollux wrote on 2017-04-30 06:54:23

Moths! Just for fun I tried doing all the battles with just moths and it worked like a charm until last boss.
Talents used were Alpha Strike, Cocoon Strike and Moth Dust. No special tactics needed, just common sense. Save your fastest moths for the Ectoplasms though, to delay losing the Flying passive as long as possible, their elemental attacks hits hard on the moths.

Everliving Spore went down too using moths only, but so did most of my back line due to his massive AOE, which didn't leave enough HP in them to kill off the rest of his team, so I "cheated" and put in Ikky (Black Claw, Flock, Savage Talon) as first pet on the next try, which of course did the trick :)

I might have to change the table a bit. It only shows in how many fights a certain pet is used, not how many of them you should have. Obviously that won't work ^^ But the Teroclaw is a real beast in this dungeon!

For those who have never done the old dungeon Wailing Caverns before, it might be helpful to note how you get out of the instance once you have fought the final pet. You are standing on a ledge, so jump all the way down to the very bottom using whatever safety measures you need to prevent dying in the fall. Now run to Muyani and ask her to teleport you out of the dungeon. You'll land right in front of the other version of Muyani, who is outside in the top of the skull. She will give you the new weekly quest.

Hello all! First off, thanks again for the fantastic guide!

Question: I remember with the Celestial tournament, if you had a certain pet (I want to say Stinker the skunk?) that could heal the first fight, then forfeit, that was another way to heal the pets. Is that still the same or what am I forgetting at this point? lol :)

Aranesh

wrote on 2017-04-01 03:37:50

It's not working in this dungeon because most fights work like wild pet battles. If you forfeit, all your pets lose a few percent of their health. It does work on the boss fights though, but most of them do damage in the first round meaning you need to sacrifice your heal pet.
An easier way for now until it's fixed is logging onto another character and healing your pets. Clearly a bug, but currently possible in challenge mode

Fragment of Suffering and Mr. Bigglesworth are not listed in the main article here, but they're part of the primary strategies.

The pets listed are the ones for hard mode strats, presumably this would be the minimum group/number of pets needed to get through the whole thing, normal or not.
Alternate strats just mean more pets to level for those catching up, but they are still great as back up strats and for those who've already leveled umpteen hundred pets ;)

Thanks for the guide. I do not have the Emerald ProtoWhelp, but as usual the Dream Whelpling (1/2/2) is a great substitute for it. Easily capturable in the Emerald Dream after Xavius (can be done on LFR) with the new Archaeology pet "Wyrmy Tunkins."

Emerald Whelpling has the same skillset ( Breath, Presence, Dream) as EPW, if you don't want to try to catch a second one.

Dream Whelpling as well.
Emerald Whelpling may work too but it doesn't have supportive stats. (edited)

Are you able to have Eternal Strider cast Cleansing Rain than forfeit the match like in the Celestial Touranment, to keep your pets at full health?

Most of the enemies have a damaging spell in their first run, so this will not work. Also for the common enemies (not the bosses), your pets lose a percentage of their health when you forfeit. It's not a useful tactic in this dungeon.

On the other hand, right now on PTR you can simply log to an alt and heal your pets any time during the dungeon. Slight oversight - I did not add it to the guide because it's clearly a bug and will be fixed at some point :-)

For non-common fights, you can use Hyjal Wisp's EvanescenceWish → swapping to another pet, provided the Wisp is faster than the opponent (haven't checked yet where it is ^^).
